About
Butjani is an intimate, family-owned and run game lodge situated on a 450 ha private nature reserve outside the historic town of Cullinan. An hour-and-a-half from Joburg by car, it’s far enough to escape the hustle of daily life, yet conveniently close for a meaningful weekend getaway.
Accommodation
Embodying the humble beauty of the Bushveld, the intentionally unassuming lodging celebrates the romance of the wild surroundings, balanced with considered detail to the essentials that ensure an undistracted and energising experience.
The lodge sleeps twelve guests between fully-serviced, en-suite tents and a double suite, all available in a king or twin bed configuration.
Four secluded tents are adorned with a private outdoor shower and porch where guests can enjoy fresh air, fair-trade artisanal coffee and friendly visits from giraffe and other wildlife that inhabit the area.
All except one tent also have an indoor shower and each en-suite offers a deluxe bathtub, complemented with luxury amenities, carefully selected for their natural formulas, fragranced with essential oils that reflect and enhance the sensory experience of the bush.
The double guest suite generously accommodates four people in two spacious bedrooms with a full, shared bathroom. Ideal for families or small groups, it is located in close proximity to the lodge’s communal facilities.

Down by the river, you may even be lucky enough to spot a hippo or two, or an elusive African fish eagle.
Start the day in quiet reflection and opt to take breakfast in the shade of the natural canopy of trees, accompanied by the relaxing sound of the Elands River.
Optional lunches are also available.
Our lodge manager, Melissa, may be a trained and qualified pastry chef, with experience working in a Michelin star restaurant, but each menu is prepared with the love of a home-cooked meal that harks back to a lazy, Sunday lunch with family.
The lodge is situated close to the historic town of Cullinan, known for the discovery of the world's largest diamond, and home to a famous 9-hole golf course.
Other family-friendly activities – zip-lining, quad biking, abseiling and target archery at Adventure Zone Cullinan, and the Mystic Monkeys and Feathers Zoo in Bela Bela – are a short drive away, as is the Dinokeng Big 5 game reserve.

Deli
From savoury to sweet, cured meats to cordials, the Deli shelves are stocked weekly with freshly-made pastries, breads and other treats – all made on the premises in small batches, with care and consideration.
Goods are available to purchase at the lodge, or through online orders, delivered to parts of Johannesburg and Pretoria, while stocks last.
